How to avoid being held hostage by ‘WannaCrypt’ ransomware

Updating your devices and anti-virus protection are keys to protecting your computer against the “WannaCrypt” ransomware said ClickAway Computer Repair’s Bhim Rai.

The newest round of ransomware crippled hospitals and disrupted computer services all over the world.

“Make sure your Windows systems have the latest update and your anti-virus has the latest definitions,” Rai said.
“Computer users should exercise extra caution with emails. If you’re not expecting an email from someone, don’t open it and don’t reply, he advises. There could be an attachment or embedded link that’s infected.”

A severe ransomware attack in April 2019 has crippled operations of local government offices in Genesee County, Michigan. More severe than originally thought, services are still stalled after almost a week. The county reports that data has not been taken.

If you’re having trouble installing updates or have too many in your business to do in a timely fashion, companies like ClickAway can send technicians in to quickly make your computers safe. Rai said companies should make sure they have firewalls with advanced threat protection.
